23. Elizabeth Alexander Marriage did take place in Lawrence County.
Birth of Elizabeth source: Death Record of Samuel Phillips and Maxwell's genealogy. Bartholomew's birth source is census records. Elizabeth is not in the 1870 census in Indiana, she may be in McLean county Illinois or en-route. Still have to verify. Death of Bartholomew is census based. John Phillips is 61 B. in VA. Alesey 61 B. NC.
i. Census is basis of children of Bartholomew and Elizabeth. Obituary for Sarah C. Phillips is from the "Chenoa Clipper" Jan. 1939. Yes I have marriage records and military records and birth and death records and obits for Sarah and William Alexander. They are my great grandparents.
24. Williamson Dunn Alexander (my favorite people!) Death of Williamson is from his probate records. The correct marriage date is the 22 of April 1836, the 15th is the day the marriage was applied for. As for the Shirley's and Nancy Fowler, I obtained my information from a family file at the New Albany Library in Indiana. Elizabeth however is not mentioned in these records, however, on the 1830 census of Floyd County there is a girl living with him that would be the right age of Elizabeth. I do have marriage record of John and Nancy. Elizabeth being is daughter is a strong educated guess. I have land documents between Williamson and John Shirley in Greene, Floyd Counties in Indiana and Jasper County Mo. I also have land records between Preston Shirley (son of John) and Williamson. Williamson and Elizabeth named one of their son's John Findley also Elizabeth's stepbrother. I also have information from a co-researcher who is also related to Williamson. Her grandmother wrote much information regarding Elizabeth and her sister Mary. This information was supposedly taken from Mary, Elizabeth's sister.
William R. and Williamson Alexander, children of Williamson and Elizabeth are on the 1860 census living with Mary Maxwell and Joseph Oliphant.
Elizabeth Shirley's death should appear as after 1857 the birth of her last child. A land document was written the following year and Elizabeth's name does not appear on the document. Yes, Elizabeth is the half sister of Belle Starr.
Mary Maxwell Alexander According to the Book "Descendants of William Oliphant of North Carolina" edited by Nancy Hawlick Stein, Mary's death is listed as August 6, 1912. However, the obituary of Mary list's her date as being August 7, 1912.. The "Ancestor's and Records of the Clarence L. Carmichael Family" is a small paper typed booklet and is not published.
ii. William Alexander My gr grandfather. He married Sarah Phillips his first cousin. I have nothing on Sarah Howell. It is stated in William's pension records that he had only one wife and there was no other marriage before his marriage to Sarah. His obit was in the "Daily Pantagraph" Bloomington, Illinois October 3, 1922.
Martha E. Alexander I do have marriage certificate between her and William Ring, her and Robert Alexander. Robert I believe died, but no proof as of yet.
Williamson, Nancy Sophia, John Finley and Elizabeth Florence Alexander Yes, the obit is from their sister, Mary Oliphant. (Bloomfield News, Vol XXXV No39, page 4 Col 2&3, August 13, 1912
25. Nancy Sophia Alexander No primary sources were listed
26. Mary Maxwell Alexander I would go with Robert's date. Thanks for the additional information.
William Joel Sexson No sources listed
Kate Sexson No sources listed. However, John D. Alexander was very close to the Sexson family, as he spent his final days at the home of William J. Sexson and Nancy Sexson. He left to Kate Alexander, in his will a book of poems. Could this Kate Alexander possibly be Kate Sexson? If so she possibly married into the Alexander family.
27. Martha A. Alexander Thanks so much for the information. I would love more info on the Brandon's. Thanks so much
28. Samuel D. Alexander no sources, I do not have any other info.
29. Mary Dunn Thanks for the information. If she was married in 1813 and born the year before I don't think my date is right. If she were born in 1813, she would have been 16 when she married. Love to have further information from Joe.
Children of Mary Dunn. I do not have a source. Let me look into this one.
30. Samuel Campbell Dunn Thanks for the info.
Children of Samuel Dunn Interesting. I have no further information.
31. John Dunn Oh yes a typo. Sorry
32. Thanks for the information
34. George Grundy Dunn Yes you did give me that information and I have it entered. Thanks
35. Clarinda Dunn I hand wrote the information from a book in the library. I cannot tell you what library, as I have been too many. No further info.
Children of Clarinda Dunn and J. G. McPhetters This article came from Randi Richarson, in the Monroe county list. No further info.
36. Felix Clelland Dunn Just my FTM error. No I have not checked the census of this family.
Child of Felix Dunn and Margaret Gould same as above, have not checked.
37. James Darwin Maxwell I do have that information regarding this family. It sits in a stack of things to enter. I have to say, my stack is about 12 inches high at the present time. I love looking for the information, but hate to enter it into the computer.
38. William Brewster Alexander I got the year dates from the 1860 census of Monroe County. As for Irvin and his death, I got that information from Jane, as well as Whiting's information. I do have Nancy in my database, but that could have been after I sent you my jed com. I am really working hard to get all my info entered. The 1860 census of Monroe County has the following for William.
| William B. Alexander | 54 | Farmer | b. KY | |
| Elizabeth Alexander | 56 | b. KY. | ||
| Elizabeth C. Alexander | 22 | b. Indiana | Birth year would be 1838 | |
| John B. Alexander | 18 | b. IN | Birth year 1842 | |
| Martha C. Alexander | 15 | b. IN | Birth year 1845 | |
| Elmira S. Alexander | 13 | b. IN | Birth year 1847 |
The 1850 census reads:
| William Alexander | 44 | b. KY |
| Elizabeth Alexander | 46 | b. KY |
| William Alexander | 21 | b. IN |
| Sarah Alexander | 18 | b. IN |
| Marga Alexander | 17 | b. IN |
| Mathew Alexander | 15 | b. IN Jane had written next to his name Whiting |
| Elizabeth Alexander | 13 | b. IN |
| ? Young | 10 | b. IN |
| Martha Young | 8 | b. IN |
| Almira | 5 | b. IN |
The dates of the 3 children you mentioned I did have wrong. As for Ann Sephira, I have her in my database as the daughter of Robert Alexander and Jane H. Dunn. She is married to a Mr. Baker. I don't have her married to William . It could have been a change I made after I sent you the ged com.
39. James Jackson Alexander Jr.
41. Robert W. Alexander Robert is one line I am currently searching. In a Land document of Monroe County Indiana March 18 & 22 Robert senior is Robert D. Robert Jr. is Robert W. In the 1870 census Monroe County, Benton TWP pg. 18 is the following:
| 127-122 | Robert | 70 |
| Jane H. | 66 | |
| Mary | 42 | |
| Martha | 40 | |
| Susan | 27 |
Next door is:
| 128-123 | Robert | 38 |
| Martha | 29 | |
| Susan A. | 5 | |
| Mary | ? | |
| Henrietta | 4/12 |
Martha wife of Robert is daughter of Williamson Dunn Alexander and Elizabeth Shirley. So yes they are cousins. I do have the marriage record of Robert and Elizabeth, and in this document he is listed as Robert W. and she is Martha E. Ring. I also have the marriage document of <Martha and William Ring. They were married in Jasper County, MO. I believe that Robert had died, as he is not longer found in any of the census records after 1870. Still looking for proof. As for Martha's birth date, the "Ancestors and Records of the Clarence L. Carmichael Family" list her date as December 29, 1842, which would make her 38 at the time of the census in 1870, even though the census say's she is 29. The 1850 Census from Jasper County MO. has her as 9 years old. I do believe Martha lied about her age. It would not be the first time I have run across this in my research. My great grandmother had everyone fooled. Not only did she lie about her age, but she also lied about her 1st child's age.
The 1860 Census for Greene County lists the following:
| William Ring | 22 |
| Martha E. Ring | 19 |
| Samuel W. Ring | 10 months old |
| Susanna Ring | 56 |
| Lucy Ring | 19 |
| Elizabeth Ring | 17 |
| Charles Ring | 14 |
Next door is:
| Joseph Oliphant | 26 |
| Mary M. Oliphant | 22 (sister of Martha E. Ring) |
| Ruth E. Oliphant | |
| William L. Oliphant (named for both grandfathers William(Williamson) and Lawson Oliphant) | |
| Francis M. Oliphant | 1 |
| William Alexander | 14 (my gr grandfather brother of Martha E. Ring) |
| Williamson D. Alexander | 14 (brother of Martha E.Ring) |
As for Martha's death date, according to the "Monroe County, Indiana Death Record 1921-1940", Martha E. died Jan 7, 1927 and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. County Early Obits" copied by Dorothy Hamm from microfilm prepared by the newspaper Archives, Indiana University, available at the Monroe County Historical Society. There is no longer a newspaper archives at IU and the microfilm cannot be located. The cards, from which the microfilm was made is part of the clipping file available at the Monroe County Historical Society. The card basically said she died. No other information. I do not have her death certificate as of yet. It is on my list to obtain.
