James Perry

James Perry1 was an older brother of my great-great-grandfather John Perry and the fourth child of Moses and Sarah (Russell) Perry. He was born about 1799, probably in Scrubgrass township, Venango county, PA.

James married Mary Jane Cross before 1825. Mary Jane was born about 1805. She was the daughter of Samuel and Letitia (Brandon) Cross. They settled on a farm in Irwin township, but had moved to Scrubgrass by 1860.

Children. James and Mary Jane had the following children, all probably born in Venango county:

  1. Juliet Perry, born about 1825.
  2. Samuel Perry, born about 1828.2
  3. Margaret Perry, born about 1830.
  4. Moses R. Perry, born about 1832.3
  5. Joseph C. Perry, born Sep 1835.
  6. Letty Perry, born about 1838.
  7. Maria J. Perry, born about 1842.

The 1850 census lists James and Mary Jane in Irwin township.

Death. James Perry died before 1880. Mary Jane died after 1883, probably in Venango county.

1 The information in this page is based on the research of Nancy Scott, as found in her book, Westward, Ho!.
2 According to Nancy, Samuel served in Company K of the 102nd PA Infantry during the Civil War. I have not been able to identify any of the Samuel Perrys who served in Pennsylvania units with this Samuel. The man who served in Co. K was listed as 18 years old upon enlistment, which doesn't agree with Samuel's probable birth year.
3 Mentioned in his grandfather Moses Perry's will.
